Name: Abby Loton
Role: UK marketing executive
Duration: Two months
Tell us a little bit about yourself – who are you and how did you get to where you are today?
I left school after doing my A-Levels and decided to pursue a career over attending university – I wanted to start earning my own money. I worked in retail and hospitality for a period of time before I started working at a food ingredients company in 2012. In this job I was given the opportunity to study as I worked, and by 2019 I had completed several courses and had gained a Certificate in professional marketing with the Chartered Institute of Marketing. In 2019 I left to have my daughter, but unfortunately on my return I was made redundant due to Covid’s impact on the business.
Early this year I came across the advertisement for the UK marketing executive role at Fullwood Packo and decided to apply. I was delighted when I heard I had been successful. The company ethos and designs for developing the marketing department came across as strong with fresh thinking, I wanted to be part of it.
Describe an average working day:
The main aim of my job is to support our UK sales team and dealers by working closely with them to provide marketing content and strategies that are relevant to their customers – ranging from literature to events.
To keep consistency throughout the entire business I adapt the Group marketing plans and feed out across all UK marketing including our social media platforms.
What are your specific interests within your career and what do you enjoy best?
I enjoy working with people – communications is a real facilitator of that – and I love organising events and social occasions.
I’m also interested in social media and its place in marketing. I enjoy the process of interpreting the analytics to better understand consumer behaviour and buying patterns.
What are your aspirations?
I’m excited about where the business is going. I want to continue to build my understanding of the dairy industry, and keep developing my knowledge and expertise.
What opportunities have you benefited from?
In my previous job I travelled to places like Cologne and Frankfurt to organise and set up stands at exhibitions. Before that I had never travelled alone, it gave me a greater sense of independence and confidence that I have been able to bring into this job.
I’ve not long been in my role at Fullwood Packo but I have already learnt so much in such a little amount of time. And not just about the dairy sector and farming industry, but also about how I can use and develop my marketing skills to drive the business forward.
What’s the best thing about working in agriculture?
It’s high tech and interesting. And the ethos of Fullwood Packo is centred around designing and engineering solutions that help the farmer by having cow health and comfort as a priority. Once lockdown is over, I’m really looking forward to getting out and visiting farms to see our products in action!
What’s your favourite drink? Tea but partial to a particular martini cocktail.
What gets you through a tough day? Knowing I will be getting a cuddle from my daughter after it.
What’s the weirdest thing on your desk? Currently a bath bomb because I love the smell.
When I’m not at work I am… running around after a two year-old – but I love it!
Tell us something few people know about you… I can play the violin.
